Tottenham’s strong start to the season has left some ‘jealous’ and ‘worried’, claims Chris Sutton, as he says there are people who want to see the team’s unbeaten start come to an end.
Ange Postecoglou’s men are top of the table after winning six of their first eight games, the last of which came in a battling 1-0 win at Luton with 10 men.
There will still be plenty of skeptics over whether they can become serious title contenders from now until the end of the season given their recent struggles as a club.
However, Sutton believes there is a feeling of ‘jealousy’ over the project Postecoglou is building and the attractive style he has brought to Spurs.
Speaking on Mail Sport’s new podcast It’s All Kicking Off, Sutton said: ‘I just sense at this moment in time that there’s a bit of jealousy towards what Tottenham are doing.

‘I don’t like it. Why can’t we just be happy for Tottenham that they’re playing [well], the rest of the country. I think they’re a bit worried by Postecoglou and his Tottenham team. In my mind, they want him to lose a game or two and fail.’
Sutton’s co-host Ian Ladyman added that most fans and pundits with a ’rounded view of English football would want to see Tottenham do well’, adding: ‘It would be a breath of fresh air for English football. It would be magnificent. It wouldn’t happen, but it would be great.’
Sutton then said there was a risk of a ‘pile-on’ of people wanting to see Spurs lose their first game of the season and slammed the reaction as ‘childish’ – but reiterated he does not believe the team will win the league.
‘There’s people on the brink of wanting this Tottenham pile on. When they lose the first game or whatever, people are going to pile on. Come on, it’s childish,’ he said.
‘It’s been a great start, I think they will continue but I will maintain they will not win the league – they will have bumps in the road.’
He saluted the north London outfit for maintaining their attacking and possession style even after having Yves Bissouma sent off in the first half at Kenilworth Road and picked out the match-winner as a real standout this season.
‘I knew they’d win when they went down to 10 men,’ he said. ‘They missed so many chances in the first ten minutes. You wouldn’t say Luton are a strong Premier League side but [Postecoglou] carries on with players being brave on the ball. [Mickey] Van de Ven has been a pretty incredible signing for them.’
Spurs are currently top of the league and are enjoying their best start to a season since 1960
