Former Ireland international Jonathan Walters has slammed Scott McTominay’s ’embarrassing’ tracking back in Manchester United’s 4-3 Champions League groip stage defeat against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Furious club supporters have already blasted the Scotland international for showing a ‘disgusting’ lack of desire to win the ball back just 10 minutes after coming on at the Allianz Arena.
Just 10 minutes into his cameo, McTominay lost the ball on the edge of Bayern’s area before showing to will or urgency to win possession back.
Footage highlighting the 26-year-old’s lacklustre effort has been criticised by Walters who made the observation that referee Glenn Nyberg covered more ground than him.
Posting on Twitter, Walters said: ‘The referee outpacing McTominay and the FIVE other attacking players in the 79th minute says all you need to know about Man Utd at the moment. Desire = Zero. Embarrassing.’

McTominay was relegated to the bench after a similarly underwhelming performance in United’s 3-1 defeat against Brighton at the weekend.
He has struggled for minutes under Ten Hag so far this season as a flurry of summer midfield additions but has starred for the Scotland national team in their European Championship qualifiers.
United went 2-0 down at the Allianz Arena after Andre Onana’s howler gifted Leroy Sane the opener in the 28th minute before Serge Gnabry doubled the host’s advantage four minutes later.
They pulled one back through new £72million striker Ramus Hojlund but again wilted after Harry Kane’s controversial penalty restored Bayern’s two-goal lead.
Casemiro scored two late goals for Ten Hag’s team, either side of Mathys Tel adding a fourth for the hosts in stoppage time.
The defeat means the struggling Red Devils have now lost four of their first six games in 2023-24, including three in a row.
