England suffer Women’s World Cup final heartache against Spain
Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has insisted that he would have kissed a male player on the lips if they had won the World Cup during a blockbuster interview with Piers Morgan. The comments come after the 33-year-old kissed Jenni Hermoso after she led Spain to victory in the Women’s World Cup final last month.
Rubiales has claimed that the kiss was ‘mutual’ and ‘consensual’ since his nation lifted the trophy, though Hermoso has publicly disagreed and filed a legal complaint last week. The 46-year-old has now stepped down from his position due to the controversy and also resigned from being vice-president of UEFA’s executive committee, but is still keen to clear his name.
In an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Rubiales claimed that during his time as a player, kissing each other on the lips was not abnormal in moments of celebration. Asked if he would have conducted himself differently if he was congratulating the men’s team on winning an international trophy, Rubiales replied: “No doubt about it, 100 per cent.
“When I was a player, there were many moments where we avoided relegation or we got promotion, where we have given what we call pecks on the lips.”

Morgan then challenged the point by replying: “The problem for many people is that when you came to Jenni Hermoso, you kissed her, you held her head with your hands, and you pulled her towards you, and you kissed her full on the lips. Many people think that was completely inappropriate behaviour.”
Rubiales disagreed with the suggestion that it was not a mutual kiss though and claimed that Hermoso lifted him off the ground, continuing: “A lot of people have seen this still image. A lot of people have seen still images of that, or indeed the kiss, which lasted two-tenths of a second.

“It was a moment of fusion. In fact, just before that, Jenni lifted me off the ground, she didn’t ask me, it was just a moment of happiness, of fusion. Piers, what you need to also understand is that she, all during this time on the podium, she is holding me, she is laughing, as she moves away she continues to laugh…”
Rubiales has reportedly been ordered to attend Spain’s National Court in Madrid later this week in order to answer questions from Judge Francisco de Jorge about the incident and respond to accusations of sexual assault.
