A 42-year-old fan has been arrested after Roy Keane was the target of an alleged assault during a heated confrontation at Arsenal's win over Manchester United.

In footage that went viral on social media after the fixture, Micah Richards was shown restraining a man as Keane angrily remonstrated.

The pundits had been on Sky Sports duty for the fixture, which ended in a 3-1 win for the home side. The incident reportedly took place shortly before the full-time whistle.

The Met police confirmed on Monday afternoon a man, 42, had now been arrested on suspicion of assault.

In a statement to Daily Star Sport, a Sky Sports spokesperson had previously said: “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media.

"In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to diffuse a situation.”

Met police had already confirmed that they were investigating the incident, calling for witnesses to come forward.

Arsenal went on to win the game 3-1, with the role on Sky Sports of Keane not altered by the incident which took place before full-time.

The Irishman stood beside Declan Rice during a post-match interview, in which the Arsenal man joked about previous criticism.

Keane had said in the past that Rice didn't score enough goals and wasn't worth the money paid for him by Arsenal, with the England man the one laughing at the Emirates.
