Former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has issued an apology to Angel Di Maria after revealing a comment he made about the Argentina star’s wife was one of the biggest regrets of his career.
The full back has retired after playing his final match for Flamengo after the Brazilian domestic season came to an end.
Filipe Luis has enjoyed an impressive career with his two stints at Atletico Madrid the highlight, either side of a one-year spell in the Premier League with Chelsea.
The 38-year-old revealed on the Charla Podcast that he regrets an incident in one of Atletico Madrid’s matches against city rivals Real Madrid.
He admitted attempting to put Angel Di Maria off his game by mentioning his wife Jorgelina Cardoso, with the defender revealing his regret over the comment and asked for the Argentina star’s forgiveness.

‘My biggest regret was with Di Maria,’ Filipe Luis said.
‘[Sergio] Aguero told me: “If you talk about his wife, he will lose his composure.”
‘I mentioned his wife and he was devastated.
‘I outplayed him the whole game, and he didn’t do well.
‘I came home and I regretted it so much. Say Maria, I’m sorry.’
Felipe Luis and Di Maria had numerous battles with the Madrid giants, but the Argentine came out on top in the most high-profile fixture.
The two went head-to-head in the 2014 Champions League final, with Real Madrid eventually emerging as 4-1 winners.
Real Madrid also denied their city rivals in the Champions League final in 2016, although Di Maria was no longer part of the side.
Filipe Luis retired from football at the end of the Brazilian league season earlier this month
Felipe Luis was part of the Atletico side to win LaLiga back in 2014, while he also lifted the Europa League on two occasions and the Copa del Rey at Atletico.
The full back won the Premier League and League Cup at Chelsea, with the Brazilian also enjoying a glittering end of his career with Flamengo.
Flamengo won the Brazilian title in both 2019 and 2020, as well as claiming the Copa Libertadores title on two occasions during Felipe Luis’ spell at the club.
His international career with Brazil included winning the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa America.
