A former Liverpool starlet made a winning start to life with Warrington Town in the sixth tier of English football.

The defender, who was signed by Warrington on Friday, played the full 90 minutes as his new side beat King’s Lynn Town 1-0 in the National League North on Saturday.

The victory has seen the newly-promoted Yellows move up to 14th in the league table after winning the Northern Premier League last season.

The new signing last played competitive football for Derby County in 2021, but has been unable to find a new club since.

Andre Wisdom, who made his Liverpool debut under Brendan Rodgers in 2012 before going on to make 22 appearances for the Reds, has been training with Warrington for several weeks.

The Leeds-born defender captained England U21’s in 2013, and had loan spells at Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion and Red Bull Salzburg before leaving Anfield permanently in 2017.

His career suffered significantly after he was the victim of a stabbing in 2020, but he returned to help Derby stay in the Championship at the end of the 2020-21 season.

However, he has admitted his body ‘was not the same’ as it had been before the incident.

He revealed to The Beautiful Game Podcast: ‘It was frustrating as when I’ve come out of hospital after like three days, I had a couple of operations, it was like my body just wasn’t the same.

‘I tried to get back into football and it wasn’t the same, I wasn’t getting the same output in terms of power or speed.

‘It was hard to take and with that comes a lot of other niggles. I got stabbed in the head. I got headaches. A little cut here (points to his chest) I couldn’t breathe that well when I came out of hospital because I had fluid on my lungs.

The 30-year-old played for Derby County most recently but revealed that after being stabbed, his body was not the same

‘I think I rushed coming back to football. So once I could walk, which was like three weeks I went straight back to football. As men we get ahead of ourselves. I played two games and I wasn’t right and my ego wouldn’t let me accept it.

‘It was the last year of my contract and Derby were going through the financial issues so I remember speaking to my agent at the time I was like I’m going to play so I’m in the shop window and then rest in the summer. Then I ripped my groin.’

Wisdom underwent unsuccessful trials at Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Birmingham City before signing for Warrington.

He told the BBC after the match: ‘It was really good to play my first 90 minutes in a while today, thanks to Warrington, the manager and all the lads who’ve worked with me.’
