Erik ten Hag not happy with decisions in the game with Arsenal
Arsenal icon Ian Wright “cannot believe” that Alejandro Garnacho began Sunday’s match on the bench for Manchester United in their 3-1 defeat away to the Gunners. The Argentine came on as a substitute and thought he had scored the visitors’ winning goal at 1-1, only for it to be ruled offside and then Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus took the game away from the Red Devils.
Wright was impressed with Garnacho’s performance in the loss, however, and urged Erik ten Hag to reconsider his tactical plans in order for the teenager to start more regularly. He started the first two Premier League games of the season, but after Marcus Rashford was shifted back to the left wing, Garnacho has played just six minutes of football in two games.
Antony instead started on the opposite flank to Rashford, but Wright feels that the Brazilian should be dropped in favour of Garnacho in order for United to thrive under Ten Hag – as the 19-year-old is more suited to the Red Devils’ style of play.
“I think Garnacho is a positive,” Wright told Premier League Productions. “I think they’ve got to find some way of getting a midfielder in their team who can get on the ball, control it and then use the pace of Rashford and use the pace of Garnacho.

“Because they’re playing on the counter-attack. I’m listening to Bruno Fernandes saying he was happy with the way it went, he thought they played well and dug in. Man United have got the kind of players [to attack more]. We saw it with Garnacho, who I cannot believe does not start in front of someone like Antony.
“He [Garnacho] can come on in that game and, even if you’re playing in that style of football, he’s surely going to be better than what Antony is giving you at this particular moment. We saw it in that little cameo there what he did.”

Wright was also of the opinion that United needed another midfielder who is able to dictate play, even though Christian Eriksen has been restored to the starting lineup following Mason Mount’s injury. Ten Hag will hope that new signing Sofyan Amrabat will help fix this issue, as Wright admitted being “nervous” as an Arsenal supporter, but United were unable to take advantage.
“For me, Man United are only missing a person to get the ball in midfield and control it and pass it so they can build up their movement off the ball,” Wright added. “That looked to me that the goalkeeper was just going long, over to Rashford, and they were bypassing the midfield.
“It was only when the game got a little bit stretched and Arsenal got a little bit anxious that they started to pass the ball around. That was when I was starting to feel a little bit more nervous about the fact they were going to pick through us in a minute. But it didn’t happen.”
