Jadon Sancho ‘offered January escape’ to top club – and ‘Man Utd will pay’

Jilted Jadon Sancho could be handed a route out of Manchester United this winter that could see him keep his place in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old was part of the United squad that earned a third-place finish in the Premier League last term to earn its place back at Europe's top table. Sancho scored six times in 26 league outings and overcame a mysterious mid-season absence for Erik ten Hag's plans to play a more prominent role in the second half of the season.

However, relations between player and manager appear to have hit a new low following Ten Hag's comments that Sancho wasn't included in his squad for the recent 3-1 loss at Arsenal due to his 'performances in training'. The player then suggested he was being made a 'scapegoat' at Old Trafford, leading to reports he may have even moved to Saudi Arabia last week.

That move never materialised, but The Sun has reported former employers Borussia Dortmund are ready to launch their own bid for the player in January. Sancho is understood to have undergone his own share of struggles in Germany, but his on-field performances far outclassed what fans have seen from his time in the Premier League thus far.

The Bundesliga giants signed Sancho from Manchester City's academy in 2017, and it was only a year before he graduated from their youth ranks to become a key star in the first team. The winger scored 50 goals and recorded 64 assists in 137 outings for the Black and Yellows, per Transfermarkt, while he's managed only 18 direct goal contributions in 82 outings for United.

Edin Terzic was interim manager at the Westfalentadion during Sancho's final six months in Dortmund, and he's since returned to the helm on permanent terms. Dortmund are reportedly 'keeping a close eye on how his situation develops' between now and the winter transfer window, having started slowly this season with only won win and two draws in the Bundesliga.

Sancho's career-best campaign to date saw him produce 20 goals and 20 assists in only 36 starts during the 2019/20 season. Those are the kind of numbers fans at Old Trafford may have dreamed he'd contribute in United colours after completing a £73million transfer two years ago.

One likely obstacle to any potential loan move, however, is Sancho's exorbitant £300,000-a-week wages, which Dortmund wouldn't be able to afford. That being the case, the club would expect United to cover 'a hefty chunk' of his pay packet if they did take him on.

However, the move may not have the same appeal if Terzic's side are knocked out of the Champions League group stage, where they line up in this season's 'Group of Death'. Opponents Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle make for heady competition in search of a knockout place.

Ten Hag welcomed Sancho back into his ranks after the wide player was absent for three months, training alone in the Netherlands due to 'physical and mental reasons'. However, the Dutchman doesn't appear to have the same sympathy for his star following his comments in the wake of United's defeat to Arsenal.

“I will not allow people saying things that are completely untrue, I’ve conducted myself in training very well this week," wrote Sancho on social media in response to those comments. That's led to reports that Ten Hag is 'gobsmacked' at how tensions with his own player have escalated, and a separation – temporary or otherwise – may be deemed best for all parties.
