Kylian Mbappe summed up Newcastle’s stunning first half display perfectly after Dan Burns gave his side a 2-0 lead over French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Newcastle fans saw their 20-year wait for Champions League football to return to St James’ Park come to an end on Wednesday night.
Their first European night since 2003 was always going to be special affair with the stadium packed and the atmosphere rocking from the very first whistle. But things only got better from there as Newcastle soon proved they belonged on the biggest stage.
Miguel Almiron gave the hosts a deserved lead to spark wild celebrations inside the ground. PSG were unable to get going as the Tyneside outfit continued to press forward for a second.
And local lad Burns popped up to make it 2-0 for Newcastle after a long VAR check. Marquinhos led the protests from a group of PSG players going up to the match official to ask why the goal hadn’t been ruled out.
