Leicester hero Craig Shakespeare diagnosed with cancer as Foxes issue statement

Football Digest: Southgate 'reluctant' to ponder England's options

Former Leicester head coach Craig Shakespeare has revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment. The 59-year-old was assistant to Claudio Ranieri when the pair sensationally won the Premier League together in 2016 and he later took over from the Italian, while most recently returning to the Foxes to help Dean Smith before their relegation.

In a club statement, Leicester said: “Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare has revealed that he has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment.

“Craig is very grateful for the kind well-wishes he has been receiving and for the privacy that he and his family have been shown during this challenging time.”

Leicester chief executive Susan Whelan said: “Everyone at the Club sends their strength and support to Craig, his wife Karen and their children Elle and Jed. They will all be in our thoughts and prayers as Craig progresses with his treatment, surrounded by the love befitting his place in the hearts of the Leicester City family and the wider game.”

Another one of his former clubs, Norwich, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) as they wrote: “We’re all with you, Craig (heart emoji). Former Norwich City coach Craig Shakespeare has revealed he has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment.”

Before coaching, Shakespeare had a stellar playing career – having amassed over 100 appearances for Walsall, West Brom and Grimsby, before rejoining the Baggies as an assistant and then enjoying two spells at Leicester either side of a switch to Hull with Nigel Pearson – while he was also England assistant to Sam Allardyce during their brief time in charge of the national team in 2016.

Shakespeare and Pearson spent several years then at Leicester, sensationally avoiding relegation but after the head coach departed – his No 2 stayed on to work with new boss Ranieri. They proved to be a fruitful partnership, guiding Leicester to Premier League glory in the fairytale story of upsetting the odds and reaching the summit.

After Ranieri departed, Shakespeare took the reigns and led them on a successful Champions League campaign where they reached the quarter-finals.

He was sacked the following season with the club in the relegation zone and has since taken assistant jobs at Watford, Aston Villa, Norwich and Leicester again before his cancer diagnosis.
