The reasons behind Lionel Messi's move to the MLS
David Beckham has spoken glowingly about the transformative impact Lionel Messi continues to have at Inter Miami. It appears that the World Cup winner is determined to pass on his unique knowledge to his younger colleagues.
Messi has settled into life in South Florida following a move at the end of his Paris Saint Germain contract. Following his blockbuster switch he has already scored 11 goals in 12 outings, while leading the team to glory in the Leagues Cup.
Despite his status, the former Barcelona great is eager to bring everyone along for the ride with his generosity when it comes to helping the young players at his new club leaving Miami co-owner Beckham awestruck.
Sitting down for a discussion with former Manchester United and England teammate Gary Neville and a selection of leading pundits for the “Stick to Football” podcast, he revealed his admiration for Messi.
“To bring someone like him to the club, we knew it would change the club and we knew it would change the league and the sport – but it’s beyond that. What he does on the pitch, what he does off the pitch, for the young kids – to bring somebody in like him is the dream, also Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

Beckham was pivotal in Miami’s successful signing of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner. He has even detailed how he “sneaked” into a hotel in Barcelona to undertake discussions with Messi’s father four years before he eventually signed.
They were also not the only team keen to sign the forward. With his contract at PSG coming to a close, he eventually turned down the chance of a return to Barcelona and a huge salary in Saudi Arabia to join Beckham in Florida.
However once the opportunity arose Messi set his heart on a sensational switch to the United States and much to the former England captain’s delight, the decision to seal a move looks inspired.
Beckham’s confirmation of him coaching some of Inter Miami’s upcoming stars to follow his lead with some tricks of the trade seems very much in line with Beckham’s description of the Argenine hero settling into every day life.
“From the moment he landed in Miami, he drives himself to the supermarket, does his shopping, goes home. People were shocked at that but that is him.
“He’s humble, hardworking, he’s got a great family- his wife is amazing, his kids are amazing. He’s just a normal guy with an unbelievable talent.
