Pennant reveals Gerrard’s key role in Liverpool move
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman has played down rumours linking Jamal Musiala to Anfield. The Bayern Munich star will be particularly familiar to manager Jurgen Klopp due to his Bundesliga links, but two rival European giants have been touted as more likely transfer destinations.
Musiala spent much of his childhood in England, remaining in Southampton’s youth set-up for a year before a further eight years at Chelsea. The attacking midfielder even represented the Three Lions at youth level before switching allegiance to Germany in 2021.
He had signed for Bayern two years prior and made swift work of breaking into their senior XI while still a teenager. Musiala is now one of the key men in Thomas Tuchel’s side, scoring 16 goals in all competitions last season.
According to Sky Germany, Liverpool are monitoring the youngster with a view to bringing him in as Mohamed Salah’s long-term replacement.

But the same report indicates that Musiala is fully focused on thriving in Bavaria, and if he were to leave, Manchester City and Real Madrid would be the favourites to secure his signature.
Either way, McManaman, who spent over a decade on Liverpool’s books, believes that luring Musiala away from the German giants is unlikely. “I think he will always be linked with Liverpool because of Jurgen Klopp’s connection with the Bundesliga and Jamal’s English connection as well,” he told Betfred.

“I would be astounded if he was allowed to leave, especially at this moment because he scored the goal to win them the Bundesliga title last season, he’s young and he offers something completely different to what Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka bring to this Bayern Munich side.
“For those reasons, I would be amazed if they allowed him to leave. He will also be linked with English teams because he spent part of his childhood in England and he represented them at youth level.
“Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham were continuously linked with English teams whilst they were playing in the Bundesliga and for me, the rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool are a bit outlandish in my opinion.”
Musiala, 20, has made a positive start to the 2023/24 season, particularly in the Champions League, where he has notched three goal contributions in as many games. The youngster was the last player to score in Bayern’s 3-1 win over Galatasaray on Tuesday evening.
