Liverpool are planning to ‘explore a range of options’ in response to the PGMOL’s apology for failing to overturn the decision to wrongfully disallow Luis Diaz’s opening goal against Tottenham on Saturday. VAR was back in the spotlight this weekend with Liverpool’s match against Tottenham embroiled in controversy.
While Liverpool had two players sent off, it was Diaz’s disallowed goal in the first half that was the centre of a huge debate. Diaz’s opening goal had been ruled out for offside but replays appeared to clearly show the Colombian was onside.
Despite the images, VAR failed to overturn the decision with no lines being drawn to determine whether the goal should stand. PGMOL later issued a grovelling apology after Liverpool lost 2-1 in dramatic circumstances, blaming ‘significant human error’.
It was later revealed that the VAR officials for the game thought the goal had been given by the on-field team and their quick ‘check complete’ reply was for that and not for the offside call in a huge error in communication. Darren England and Dan Cook were then stood down by the PGMOL for the remaining games of the weekend.
But Liverpool clearly don’t feel PGMOL’s apology and their actions to England and Cook go further enough. Their statement read: “We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.
“It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention. That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

“This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again. In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”
Liverpool’s statement comes after Klopp condemned the PGMOL apology as being too little too late.
He said: “Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game. Did Wolves get points for it? We won’t get points for it. We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier.
“The decision was made really quick for that decision. It changed the momentum for the game. It was super difficult but the boys dealt extremely well with it.”
