Liverpool title challenge ruled out as Darwin Nunez sent concerning message

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey does not think Jurgen Klopp’s side has what it takes to win the Premier League this season. He has also dealt a blow to Darwin Nunez, claiming the club-record signing is currently only good enough for the bench.

Liverpool have started the campaign strongly, sitting just two points behind leaders Manchester City. They suffered their first defeat in a hugely controversial match at Tottenham on Saturday.

Klopp was forced to oversee a complete overhaul of his midfield in the summer. He allowed five midfielders to leave, while bringing in four new signings in that position.

The new recruits have settled in well and earned rave reviews, particularly Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Five wins in a row saw some supporters dreaming of a second title under Klopp.

Heskey has been enthused by what he has seen from the new-look Reds side. But he thinks the title would be a step too far this term.

Heskey told altindex.com: “I’ve been hugely impressed with Liverpool so far, because they’ve brought in a number of new players who have actually settled down really quickly. The difficult thing about bringing new players in is you’re always waiting six months to a year for them to bed in, but these new players, such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, have really bedded in well, which is great for Liverpool.

“And the front line now has an abundance of quality players to call upon that are doing well, which is exciting. But can Liverpool challenge for the title this season?

“I’m not totally convinced they can because with Manchester City in this division they’d have to be looking at securing 90/95+ points to beat them, which I think will be a step too far. It’s a tough one. But I expect next season they will be challenging for the title with the progress they’re making.”

Nunez was an unused substitute in Saturday’s defeat to Spurs as nine-man Liverpool suffered late heartache. The Uruguay star, who is set to cost the Reds up to £85million, has started just two league games so far this term.

Heskey can see that trend continuing as he does not think Nunez is part of Liverpool’s best triumvirate. He added: “In terms of Liverpool’s front three, I think Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo are the best combination for Jurgen Klopp to use.

“Darwin Nunez works best at the moment coming off the bench and making an impact to unsettle teams a little later on. I really like that combination.”
