Man City keeping close eye on Liverpool as Reds tackle defining fixture schedule

Manchester City might have a close eye on Liverpool’s next five fixtures as Jurgen Klopp’s ‘Liverpool 2.0’ continue to prove they can challenge for the Premier League title again. Sweeping summer changes to the Reds’ squad has clearly had the desired effect, with City perhaps looking over their shoulder at the Merseysiders.

A fine 3-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday helped Liverpool continue their unbeaten start to the campaign. Klopp’s side finally seem capable of competing with perennial champions City this term.

Six consecutive wins across all competitions have helped Liverpool kick off the new season in excellent form, with last season’s woes firmly in the past. The next five fixtures could show just how ready the Reds are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Beating Leicester in the Carabao Cup will be a test for Liverpool’s strength in depth. Klopp is likely to field a second-string side, just as he did against LASK in the 3-1 Europa League victory last week.

A victory against the Foxes would be a success for Liverpool’s summer recruitment, with business focused on providing Klopp with better options within his squad. The same would be the case a week later when the German is likely to field a weaker team against Union Saint-Gilloise in Europe.

In the Premier League, Liverpool face three huge tests that could provide evidence of how far they have come over the last few months. In-form Tottenham host the Reds on Saturday, with the North Londoners hoping to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Brighton welcome the Reds a week later. The Seagulls have become one of the best teams outside of the recognised Big Six, and have already comfortably seen off Newcastle and Manchester United in recent weeks.

That match is then followed by the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park. Continuing the unbeaten run through those five matches will have the Premier League title contenders fearing what Klopp has dubbed ‘Liverpool 2.0’.

“We decided last year we had to change a lot,” Klopp said last week. “We are not stable yet, there are so many things not (right)… but we are really good already. Aston Villa was a really, really, really good game, but then two weeks later (against Wolves) we played a really, really, really bad first half.

“Nobody wants to see that but it’s part of the deal. When you want to change things you can’t expect everything to click from the first moment. This was the new Liverpool, Liverpool 2.0! But this was only one glimpse of what we can be, we don’t know where we can end up.”
