Man City ‘robbed’ of one-on-one as referee halts Jack Grealish to give free-kick

Manchester City were left fuming as referee Simon Hooper halted a late counter-attack against Spurs that could have seen them score a late winner in their 3-3 draw.

A chaotic clash at the Etihad unfolded on Sunday afternoon, with Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min managing to open the scoring for Spurs, only to score an own goal equaliser for Man City just three minutes later. Man City then took the lead on 31 minutes through Phil Foden, before being pegged back after the break through a superb strike from Giovani Lo Celso.

On 81 minutes, Pep Guardiola's side looked to have won the contest thanks to Jack Grealish, who turned home Erling Haaland's cross to give City a 3-2 lead. But the game took yet another turn in injury-time when Dejan Kulusevski popped up to head, or rather shoulder home, to equalise for Tottenham.

Then, with just a few minutes of stoppage time left, striker Erling Haaland dropped deep for the ball and rode a challenge which Hooper awarded an advantage for. The Norwegian then spotted Grealish racing in behind the Spurs backline, producing an excellent ball for the winger to latch onto which would have seen him go through one-on-one with Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs net.

However, instead of letting play continue, Hooper bizarrely opted to blow his whistle to bring play back, leaving Man City irate at his decision. So angry were the players in the aftermath of the decision, Haaland even jumped on to social media afterwards, writing: "Wtf." He also told a Spurs coach to "f*** off."

Haaland's father, Alf-Inge Haaland, who also played for Man City, commented on the post on X, formerly Twitter: "Terrible."

And it's safe to say Man City fans were in agreement with the Haaland's with plenty also voicing their frustrations at the decision as well. One commented: "It’s actually hilarious. Simon Hooper plays advantage, see’s Grealish is 1 on 1 then blows for a foul. Laughable."

A second said: "Simon Hooper singlehandedly cost us that game." A third added: "Simon Hooper absolute disgrace of a referee. Played the advantage then called it back for a foul when Grealish was through. Absolute shambles."

And with Arsenal having managed to beat Wolves 2-1, and Liverpool having produced a sensational late comeback against Fulham to win 4-3 at Anfield, the draw with Spurs could prove to be costly heading into the fixture laden festive period.
