Manchester United players are reportedly still angry over how David de Gea was treated prior to his departure from the club in the summer.

De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of June and the Spaniard left the club after 12 years of service.

Terms had been agreed on a new deal for the 32-year-old, reducing his salary from £375,000 a week, but the club later backed out of the agreement.

Erik ten Hag had reservations about De Gea’s ability with the ball and opted to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan for £47million to be his new No 1.

According to The Sun, Man United’s squad are still fuming over the treatment De Gea received prior to his departure.

It is understood there was disquiet among United’s players at the manner of the Spaniard’s exit.

The 32-year-old was a popular member of the dressing room and won the Premier League golden glove last season after keeping the most clean sheets in the competition.

De Gea, who is still without a club, had expressed frustration at the circumstances around his departure when he posted a circus emoji on Twitter after the U-turn on his contract.

He later insisted that he was ‘seeking a new challenge’, despite Man United withdrawing the contract offer.

Bruno Fernandes, who took over as Man United captain this summer, wrote on social media at the time that De Gea ‘deserved’ a better exit from the club.

The Portuguese midfielder posted on Instagram: ‘You know what I think about you and how much i will miss you bro.

‘You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories.

‘You made history at the club and your name will never be forgotten, and that no one can’t take away from you. All the best for what’s coming for you and your family.’

De Gea, who was heavily criticised for his ball-playing abilities during his final seasons at Old Trafford, was ultimately succeeded by Onana.

But the Cameroon international has endured a difficult start to his career at Man United.

Onana made a high-profile error for the opening goal in the Red Devils 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday and has conceded 14 goals in his opening six matches.
