Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly readying a bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi as they look to bolster their backline after a series of injuries. Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked with a move for the Englishman but it appears Spurs’ interest is more concrete.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham recently held a transfer meeting to discuss potential options in the heart of their defensive line. Guehi and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite are among the players on their radar while AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, Morato of Benfica and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio are also being tracked.
Spurs will need to pick up at least one centre-back in the New Year with Micky van de Ven currently out until next year after tearing his hamstring during Tottenham’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea earlier this month. The Dutchman has been excellent since moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Wolfsburg in the summer and will be a big miss.
Meanwhile, long-time servant Eric Dier is out of contract in June. The 29-year-old is able to secure a pre-contract agreement with other clubs in January providing Spurs don’t renew his contract before then, which isn’t expected to happen.
Guehi is viewed towards the top of Tottenham’s shortlist after a couple of very impressive seasons at Selhurst Park. But he won’t come cheap.
Crystal Palace want no less than £60million for their star defender, who looked certain to move elsewhere last summer after heavy links with Chelsea and Man Utd. However, it appears clubs may have missed their opportunity to snap him up with multiple reports claiming the 23-year-old will not entertain a mid-season move as he eyes a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2024.

Guehi started off his career at Chelsea but besides a couple of League Cup appearances for his boyhood club the Ivory Coast-born star struggled to break into their first team. Following two spells on loan at Swansea City in the Championship, Guehi was sold to Crystal Palace for £18m in 2021, making him the club’s third-most expensive signing at the time, behind Christian Benteke and Mamadou Sakho.
Guehi instantly hit the ground running and now the Blues are hoping to bring him back to Stamford Bridge for triple the price they sold him for.
