Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag told to axe Anthony Martial despite praising star

Erik ten Hag not happy with decisions in the game with Arsenal

Manchester United have been told to ditch Anthony Martial despite the striker receiving praise from Erik ten Hag this weekend. Former France international Emmanuel Petit believes the time is right for the Red Devils to part ways with Martial.

The former Monaco attacker has started United’s last two Premier League matches. He was singled out for a positive performance by Ten Hag after the 3-1 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday.

However, injuries and a lack of goals have curtailed his eight years in Manchester. Petit believes now is the time for the 27-year-old to leave Old Trafford.

“It’s time for Anthony Martial to leave Man United. Monaco are top of the league and they’re scoring goals with good strikers, so I’m not sure about him going there,” the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder told BettingSites.co.uk.

“I don’t know what the best club for Martial will be but I know it’s time for him to leave Manchester United. He’s been at Manchester United for too long now and it’s very frustrating because he has great qualities but too many injuries has made it difficult.

“I’m not sure if he will come back to Ligue 1. When you leave for a long time it’s difficult to come back, especially after a spell where he was not good enough.

“If he was at Manchester United for years and scored loads of goals being one of the best strikers in the Premier League and winning titles, then it would have been good for him to come back to France, but I think he’ll look for a different country.”

Martial scored just six Premier League goals last season. That was partially why United invested over £70million in former Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, who looks set to replace the Red Devils No 9 in the coming weeks.

Hojlund impressed against Arsenal on Sunday and played a key role in the move that preceded Alejandro Garnacho’s disallowed goal. The Norwegian’s clever backheel allowed Casemiro to put Garnacho through on goal.

But Ten Hag was similarly pleased with Martial’s display. He told Sky Sports after the game: “I think Anthony Martial, a very good performance, so I was pleased.”

Martial was linked with a departure during the summer transfer window but a deal did not materialise. He now seems set to compete with Hojlund for the centre-forward position this term.
