Man Utd learn Martinez injury status after star joined Argentina camp ‘in pain’

Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has escaped a serious injury after concerns over his withdrawal from Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal, according to reports. Erik ten Hag should have the 25-year-old available to select once he represents Argentina during the international break.

In the 67th minute of the 3-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium, Martinez pulled up and made way for Harry Maguire, sparking fears he had joined first-choice partner Raphael Varane on the sidelines.

Ten Hag confirmed Martinez’s exit was due to a foot issue but could not clarify the severity in his post-match interviews.

He said: “Licha had a problem on his foot, but I am not sure if it’s an injury. We have to wait, to see, to make the diagnosis.”

But Martinez was spotted leaving north London with Argentina teammate Alejandro Garnacho after full-time, which suggested he was leaving for international duty.

On Monday, reports in Argentina claimed the United No 6 was ‘in pain’ around the same area where he suffered a fractured metatarsal last season.

However, after evaluations by national team doctors, TyC Sports report that Martinez is fine and should be available to face Ecuador and Bolivia in the coming week.

The update will come as a relief for Ten Hag, who has had to navigate around compiling injury problems at the start of the new campaign.

Varane, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount all started United’s opening two games but are currently on the injury table.

Rasmus Hojlund also had to wait until the trip to Arsenal to make his Red Devils debut after arriving with a back issue that was detected during his medical.

Tom Heaton, Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad are also out of contention while recovering from their respective injuries.

And deadline day addition Sofyan Amrabat’s availability is currently up in the air amid reports that, like Hojlund, he landed at Old Trafford with a minor back problem.

Ten Hag will be desperate to have Martinez at his disposal when club football returns next week, with two daunting fixtures on the horizon.

United host Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford as they look to return to winning ways in the Premier League next Saturday.

Ten Hag’s side travel to Bayern Munich – unbeaten in 34 Champions League group games – to start their European campaign a few days later.
