A Newcastle United fan has been stabbed after a gang attacked him in Milan on the eve of the club’s return to the Champions League.
The Daily Mail report, via Milano Today, that a 58-year-old British man was ambushed by a group of seven or eight men on Monday night at around midnight.
The man was stabbed in his arm and back near the city centre, before police stepped in and he was rushed to hospital where he is in a stable condition.
The report states that nothing was stolen from the victim and the motive for the attack is still unknown.
Newcastle are aware of the reported attack and are in contact with local authorities in Milan.
A club statement read: ‘We are deeply concerned by reports that a supporter was seriously assaulted in Milan on Monday evening and we are liaising with local authorities to understand the circumstances.
‘Our thoughts are with the supporter and their family and we hope for a full and speedy recovery.’
The Magpies are due to play their first Champions League game in 20 years when they face AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night.
The match kicks off in the early slot of 5.45pm and is set to go ahead as planned.
