Newcastle ‘on alert’ over Liverpool target with contract talks ‘moving slowly’

Newcastle are reportedly keeping an eye on the situation of Liverpool transfer target Jarrod Bowen. The West Ham star has grabbed the attention of several big European clubs with talks over a new Hammers contract allegedly ‘moving slowly’.

Bowen has caught the eye with his Premier League form over the last few years. And he has started the new top-flight term incredibly well, scoring five goals already for David Moyes’ side.

The 26-year-old has earned a recall to the England squad for October’s fixtures against Australia and Italy. Having earned further international recognition, he is also attracting interest from other clubs.

It is claimed that Newcastle are considering a big-money switch for the forward. Head coach Eddie Howe is reportedly a long-term admirer of the former Hull player, who joined West Ham for £16m in January 2020.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle could mount a speculative bid to beat Liverpool to the signing of Bowen. However, the wide man’s representatives are ‘aware’ that Liverpool are considering replacing Saudi-linked Mohamed Salah with the West Ham ace.

Liverpool denied approaches from Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad in the summer, but will likely face further interest in January and next summer. Bowen’s ability to move inside from the right wing onto his left foot makes him the ideal alternative to the Egyptian.

West Ham remain hopeful of persuading Bowen to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to end in 2025. However, discussions are reportedly moving slowly which could leave the East Londoners in a difficult position if Bowen’s contract enters its final 12 months.

Newcastle would be completing a major coup if they attracted Bowen to St James’ Park. The England international has previously said that Salah is the player he most bases his game on, opening suggestions that he may prefer a switch to Anfield.

Asked in May which footballer he looks up to, Bowen responded: “I still think Salah. He has scored 30 goals, and people still say he is having a bad season. I think for the numbers he has produced consistently since he has been in the Premier League, he is still up there.

‘But I also think Bukayo as well at Arsenal. I had the honour of playing with him for England and I saw how good he was.”
