Newcastle share the goals with record Premier League has never seen before

Newcastle went on the rampage in South Yorkshire to equal their biggest ever away win in the Premier League and set a record never seen before in the top tier.

Newcastle plundered EIGHT goals to breathe new life into their season. But this demolition of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane could well spell the death knell for boss Paul Heckingbottom.

Eddie Howe's men helped themselves to an avalanche of goals from Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. The eight different goalscorers is a record in the Premier League.

It left the blunted Blades stuck in the bottom three, still looking for their first win since returning to the big time. The result is sure to pile huge pressure on Heckingbottom, who is now clinging to his job following a dismal start of just one point from six games.

And it will cool the heat that had been turned on Eddie Howe following his own side's difficult opening to the domestic campaign. Howe's men arrived at Bramall Lane boosted by their credible draw at AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek.

In the Premier League, Newcastle had won just two of their first five matches and were in danger of losing their opening three on the road in the top flight for the first time since 1999. But there was no need to worry.

Howe had recalled Wilson as part of four changes to the team that started in the San Siro. The afternoon started in emotional fashion following a heartfelt and loving tribute to Blades women's star Maddy Cusack, who tragically died last week at the age of just 27.

The club's flag flew at half mast, there was a minute's silence before kick-off and her photograph was shown on the big screen. It left Bramall Lane feeling more charged than normal.

But it took Newcastle less than 35 minutes to sprint into a controversial 3-0 lead and leave home fans more seething than sad. Luke Thomas had blown two great chances to fire the Blades ahead – and the misses were to prove costly.

Longstaff broke the deadlock with a neat finish after Gordon had outfoxed Egan on the by-line. The ball appeared to strike Gordon's hand in the process, but he knew little about it.

Heckingbottom's mood went from bad to worse 10 minutes later when Burn stole in at the back post to convert Kieran Trippier's corner from point blank range. And home fans became hostile just minutes later when Trippier's free-kick was headed into the bottom corner by Botman.

Most inside the stadium thought the initial foul by Jack Robinson on Longstaff shouldn't have been given, and Newcastle stars were pelted with bottles as they celebrated in front of the Kop. The Blades had been cut to ribbons – and the truth was this had now become a damage limitation exercise for the hosts.

Wes Foderingham and some comical refereeing appeared to stem the tide. Gordon should have had a penalty when Jayden Bogle tripped him, while Foderingham denied Wilson and Gordon with fine saves.

But the floodgates opened again after the break, when Wilson made it 4-0 before the hour mark with the simplest of finishes and Gordon curled a sublime effort into the bottom corner. Almiron, Guimaraes and substitute Isak all got in on the act to complete the rout.
