Phil Jones has announced his new career move after leaving Manchester United as a free agent in the summer.

The 31-year-old revealed on social media on Tuesday that he has enrolled on a PFA global football sport directorship course and confirmed he was currently doing his coaching badges.

‘Start of a new journey,’ he wrote on social media as caption to a series of pictures showing him coaching United youth teams.

‘Great to begin the global football sport directorship course with the PFA business school, learning new things about the game, whilst also continuing to push ahead with my A licence and badges at the club that gave me so much.

‘Excited to get started.’

Jones left United upon the expiry of his contract earlier this summer after 12 years with the club.

The former England international has since been back at Carrington to watch training sessions involving United youth teams.

Sources close to United insist there are no plans for Jones to join the coaching staff on a permanent basis.

Former players regularly engage with the academy at Old Trafford, giving a great opportunity to the young players to work with experienced ex-United players.

Jones remains a free agent and could sign for a new club outside of the transfer window.

The defender has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and made just 13 appearances in all competitions over the last three seasons, failing to play a single minute last term.

His last Premier League start came in April last year as United were trounced 4-0 at Anfield towards the end of Ralf Rangnick’s ill-fated interim spell at Old Trafford.

‘It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years,’ Jones, who made 229 appearances for United and scored six goals, said after leaving the 20-time champions of England.

There’s no denying that.

‘There is no hiding away from that.

‘My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more.

‘And, you know, I’ve missed playing football. I missed it.’
