A Championship referee had fans wondering if he’d been caught short after dashing off the pitch during a game.
Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday were taking on each other at Carrow Road when official Matt Donohue suddenly legged it to his dressing rooms. The stoppage, which lasted a full three minutes, left fans chanting, “Where the f**** the referee!?”
Donohue had actually gone off to fix his communication system, which had malfunctioned shortly before the hour mark. Norwich’s official X (formerly Twitter) account: “There's a stoppage in play as the referee's radio is repaired.”

One fan quipped in reply: “Should he really be listening to the radio during a game anyway??” Another added: “Farce at Norwich. Game held up due to a failure of referee's ear piece. Embarrassed ref has run off the field into the tunnel.”
Fans couldn’t help but tease the official as he returned to the pitch. One fan at Carrow Road posted: “Jubilant cheers around Carrow Road from both sets of supporters as the referee returns onto the pitch after fixing the radio. Chants of 'he’s had a s***' echo around the ground'. Other fans agreed, with one saying: “He went for a s***.”

As for the match itself, Norwich piled more misery on lowly Wednesday with a 3-1 win. An early wonder-strike on his full debut from Borja Sainz set the Canaries on their way and they responded impressively in the second half after being pegged back by Bailey Cadamarteri’s 32nd-minute header.
Ashley Barnes restored City’s lead three minutes into the second half and Jonathan Rowe’s back-post header settled the issue after 72 minutes. The win keeps Norwich on the fringes of the play-off race, while for the relegation-threatened Owls it brought an end to an encouraging run of seven points from a possible nine.
