Rodgers rushes to push steward off young Celtic fan who got tackled to floor

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been praised for fending off stewards who had tackled a young fan to the floor at full-time after Celtic’s 3-0 SPFL win at Livingston.

Rodgers came to the aid of a young boy who had ran onto the pitch at full-time before he was apprehended by stewards and grounded. The former Liverpool boss ran over to the child before calmly taking control of the situation.

The Celtic boss, who’s in his second spell in charge of the club, put an arm around the youngster before leading him back to the stands where he received great applause from Celtic fans behind the goal. The young lad clapped and held his arms out to the Bhoys faithful behind the goal before Rodgers made sure he climbed back over the advertising boards.

Fans reacted on social media, with one fan on twitter saying: “Brendan having none of it,” whilst a second said: “The Gaffer done well there stewards raging lol.” Fans also joked that the incident was set up by Rodgers in order to get the fans back onside after he left to bitterness from Celtic supporters back in 2019.

One said: “BR has set that up, got to love the politics he’s playing to get the fans back on board, my gaffer,” a second commented: "The wee guy will be a paid actor. All hail Brendan, the director,” with a third adding: “Once bitten twice shy…f*** it…I’m an easy ride. I’m all in again!"

But reaction was split, with some fans feeling that Rodgers shouldn’t have intervened in what could spark a trend amongst kids entering the pitch knowing they could well be saved by their heroes.

A comment said: “Totally wrong to do this imo kids should be nowhere near the pitch and this will only encourage them to start trying it again.” While a second added: “With the greatest of respect, the boy shouldn’t have been on the pitch at all, and whoever he’s with is an irresponsible clown."

Reo Hatate’s first half penalty put 10-man Celtic on the road to victory as former Manchester City stopper Joe Hart was sent off after 28 minutes. Second half goals from Matt O’Riley and Daizen Maeda secured the victory but the full-time scenes dominated Rodgers’ reaction.

Speaking on the incident in his post-match interview, Rodgers defended the child when asked about him intervening with security and the young lad. He said: "It's a young kid who wants to see his heroes, he shouldn't be punished or prosecuted for that"
