Scotland trying to get in-form England star to swap sides after Southgate snub

England train ahead of Malta clash

Scotland are hoping to persuade Anthony Gordon to switch his allegiances to the Tartan Army after Gareth Southgate’s latest snub. The Newcastle midfielder wasn’t included in Southgate’s England squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia despite his excellent form in the Premier League.

Gordon has made 34 appearances for England at youth level from under-18s to under-21s but he is yet to receive his first senior call-up, however, he does have the opportunity to do so north of the border through his grandparents.

According to the Daily Star, Gordon, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento have all been made aware of the Scots’ interest in their services. It seems unlikely Gordon would trade the opportunity to play for his country when he appears to be so close to breaking into Southgate’s side but stranger things have happened in international football.

Former Newcastle United interim manager turned Scotland assistant coach John Carver would love to see Gordon throw on the navy blue jersey. He said: “If someone’s got a relation who is Scottish, then we have to look at it.

“It’s then down to what he decides but we are aware that these are big decisions about their future. It’s no secret that Newcastle is my team and I watch them more than anybody.

“We are aware they have several outstanding players, who have never been capped by England at senior level, who qualify for Scotland.” England remains the most attractive proposition for young players in the British Isles due to their international standing.

Declan Rice and Jack Grealish both turned down the opportunity to play for the Republic of Ireland after representing the Boys in Green at Under 21s level while Celtic wonderkid Karamoko Dembele recently chose to play for the England under-17s after starting his international career with Scotland’s under-15s.

Gordon will have to wait a little while longer for his opportunity to represent the Three Lions but it seems like only a matter of time before he does.
