A Sheffield United fan found better things to do whilst watching the Blades’ 8-0 thrashing by Newcastle, after being spotted by TV cameras reading a book.
The Magpies put in a record-breaking performance at Bramall Lane, becoming the first Premier League side to have eight different goal-scorers in one game, but it was a tough watch for the Sheffield United fans.
Most supporters headed for the exits by the time the seventh goal had gone in, but one fan decided to stay to the end and get stuck into something much more riveting than the football on display in front of her.
The Sky Sports cameras honed in on the fan who chose to continue reading a book rather than watch the hammering her Blades team were getting on the pitch.
The disregard for her team’s performance perfectly summed-up a nightmare afternoon for Paul Heckingbottom’s side at the hands of a rampant Newcastle.
One fan decided getting stuck into her latest read was more exciting then the Blades display
Sheffield United were beaten 8-0 by Newcastle and remain winless in the league this season
Newcastle set a new Premier League record after eight different scores notched in the rout
Sean Longstaff gave Eddie Howe’s side the lead, netting the opener despite the ball appearing to hit Anthony Gordon’s hand in the build-up to the goal.
Dan Burn and Sven Botman then added two more goals in the first half to put the game beyond the reach of the home side.
Further strikes Callum Wilson, Gordon, Miguel Almiron and Bruno Guimaraes within 17 minutes of each other saw Newcastle hit seven, before substitute Alexander Isak completed the rout with the team’s eighth of the afternoon.
The image of the women reading a book was the talk of social media, with many praising the fan for staying to end, even if she was no longer watching the action.
‘I salute this Sheffield lady for being loyal to her club. She won’t leave till the final whistle. This picture won our hearts.’ One fan wrote on X.
Another agreed with her loyalty by saying; ‘Fair play. Rest of them have gone home. At least she is sticking it out.’
Other fans thought the moment was hilarious and basked in the lady choosing to pick up where was in her latest read rather than continue to watch her team lose.
There were mixed reactions to the sight of a fan reading a book at Bramall Lane on social media
‘Things were getting so bad with Sheffield United losing 8-0 to Newcastle this fan took a book to read instead!’ said one post, alongside a number of crying with laughter emojis.
While another hailed it as one of the moments of the campaign by stating; ‘The old girl reading a book instead of watching Sheffield United is the highlight of the season by some distance.’
Yet, there are always some who are outraged at such a sight and the fact that the supporter has disregarded what’s in front of her. With another post calling out her loyalty.
‘If she was truly loyal she wouldn’t be reading a book. I watched by team get pumped countless times and and I still watch and stay until the final whistle’.
The defeat means Sheffield United are still looking for their first Premier League win of the season, having taken just a point from their first six games.
They are now bottom of the table, and joined in the bottom three by fellow promoted sides Luton and Burnley, who are also still looking to notch their first three points of the campaign.
