Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri will not sell the club, even if they are relegated to League One – according to reports.

Chansiri has become an increasingly unpopular figure at Hillsborough following a start to the season that has seen Wednesday win just one league game as they sit bottom of the Championship table.

According to the Sun, he plans to remain in charge of the club even if they suffer relegation to League One at the end of this season.

The Thai businessman acquired the Yorkshire club in 2015, and his investment helped them to reach the second-tier play-offs in 2016 and 2017.

However, Chansiri was found to have breached financial fair play rules when purchasing Hillsborough in 2019, incurring a six-point penalty that played a part in relegation to League One at the end of the following season.

Wednesday eventually fought their way back to the Championship earlier this year, but manager Darren Moore left the club just three weeks after beating Barnsley in a Wembley play-off final due to a disagreement with Chansiri.

Xisco Munoz, Moore’s replacement, failed to win any of his first 10 league matches at the helm and was dismissed last month.

The strugglers finally picked up their first win of the season against fellow relegation contenders Rotherham United last weekend, but the club’s owner has continued to frustrate supporters.

Chansiri called on fans to help raise £2million to pay off HMRC debt and pay staff wages in order to avoid a transfer embargo from the EFL as he suggested he would no longer put money into the club due to ‘selfish’ sections of the fanbase who ‘believe they are the real owner’.

In a response to his critics, Chansiri told the Sheffield Star: ‘If you don’t want to save your club, then don’t call yourselves the owners and me the custodian.

‘If you save your club, then you have the right to ask me to leave. There is no need to make it complicated. I could leave no issue. That is the easy way.

‘I have tried my best for almost nine years, I try everything even in the Covid situation with no revenue. If I wanted to make it bad, I would have already left. I don’t need to be here.’

Chansiri eventually paid the outstanding tax bill and the staff wages after finding the required funds.

Wednesday have continued to struggle on the pitch, with a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City on Saturday leaving them nine points from safety.
