Sir Jim Ratcliffe has top Man Utd priority before Erik ten Hag sack decision

Erik ten Hag has ‘no concern’ over future at Old Trafford

Incoming Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a top priority to deal with before he considers the future of manager Erik ten Hag, it has been claimed. The INEOS founder and CEO is due to take control of the footballing operation at Old Trafford.

The 71-year-old will pay £1.25billion to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the Premier League club. It has been suggested such a stakeholding will see INEOS Group take two of the seats in the United boardroom, which has been controlled by the Glazers since 2005.

Ratcliffe has already promised to invest £245million into the infrastructure at United with Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training base both in need of upgrades. But Fabrizio Romano reports that before any thought is given to Ten Hag’s job security, Ratcliffe wants to get his people in position first.

Romano reports via CaughtOffside that it is only a matter of time until Ratcliffe’s investment is made official and that he is currently focused on ‘ employing the right people to put on the board’. Sir Dave Brailsford is expected to be one of them.

The INEOS director of sport, Brailsford oversaw huge Tour de France success with Team Sky and also helped British Cycling win a flurry of Olympic gold medals. Jean-Claude Blanc, the ex-Juventus CEO, is also expected to come in and become the new chief executive.

Romano adds that any conversations about Ten Hag’s future will not happen until the positions are filled and he has sporting control of the 20-time English champions. That will be a relief to Ten Hag who is under increasing pressure.

United have lost 12 of 24 matches before Sunday’s trip to Anfield to face arch-rivals Liverpool. The Dutchman oversaw a chastening 7-0 defeat to the Red Devils’ bitter rivals at the same venue back in March.

Another defeat – which would be their eighth top-flight loss this term – on Merseyside would leave them 13 points off the top of the Premier League table after 17 games. It would also come just days after United crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage with a measly four points from a possible 18.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker however fears for United even after Ratcliffe comes in and takes charge. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “Ratcliffe is supposedly coming in, it’s supposed to be quite imminent.

“And Brailsford is supposed to be coming in, but it’s hard to envisage it changing it that much, really. If you look at them now, how many players do they need to change things? Half the team?

“That takes time, that takes money and it takes good recruitment, which is the same with any club, whatever your budget is. Their [spending power] has been pretty big, but it just shows you how big recruitment is and getting it right.”
