Sky Sports to trial 'game mode' camera during Arsenal vs Man City

Sky Sports are set to trial new ‘game mode’ camera during Arsenal’s clash against Manchester City at the Emirates – with the new angle giving a view similar to the video game world

Football fans will be treated to a new camera angle during Arsenal’s clash against Manchester City this weekend, with Sky Sports and the Premier League trialling their new ‘game mode’ view.

The new perspective will look similar to how a football match looks in the video game world – as seen in franchises like EA Sports FC – formerly FIFA – and eFootball, with its vantage point allowing the camera to give viewers a unique view of runs and  ball movement – as well as ‘better appreciation of space’.

The camera – provided by BatCam – moves from side to side along the length of the pitch, moving along a rail to quickly keep up with action, which bosses hope will give an exciting new way to watch games.

It has already been used at the Emirates for the WSL clash between Arsenal women and Liverpool women last weekend and if this latest trial proves successful it could be rolled out to future Premier League games.

This will be the first time Sky has used a ‘railcam’ in football, with Arsenal working in close collaboration with the Premier League over the trial.

Phil Marshall, of Sky Sports, said: ‘We’re very excited to see what ‘Game Mode’ can bring to the overall viewing experience for fans and believe it has great potential when it comes to in-game innovation. We thank Arsenal FC and the Premier League for their support in testing this innovation.’

Meanwhile, Rachael Nightingale – Head of Media Operations and Innovation at the Premier League – added that it was ‘always looking for ways to enhance the broadcast experience for fans around the world’.

‘During this period of testing with Sky Sports and Arsenal FC, we hope “Game Mode” will provide a new and exciting way to enjoy the action at home,’ she said.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal come into the game unbeaten this season – but are in third place and still trail league leaders City by a point after five wins and two draws.

City, meanwhile, have won six and lost just one of their opening seven games.
