Son Heung-min shows his disbelief after being denied a BLATANT penalty in South Korea’s friendly win over Saudi Arabia in a near-empty St James’ Park

  • Son Heung-min was denied a clear penalty against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday
  • The Tottenham captain appeared to be fouled in the St James’ Park friendly
  • Son couldn’t believe that he wasn’t awarded a penalty by Andy Madley

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min was left fuming after being denied a blatant penalty in South Korea’s friendly clash against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening.

Son hasn’t been involved in competitive fixtures during the international break but featured in two friendlies for South Korea against Wales and Saudi Arabia.

Tuesday’s encounter saw Son remain in England as he travelled with his national team colleagues to Newcastle’s St James’ Park for the friendly fixture.

South Korea eventually ran out 1-0 winners with Cho Gue-sung’s first-half strike proving to be the difference, but Son felt aggrieved after being denied a penalty.

The Spurs talisman was about to fire a shot goal-bound before being cleaned out by an opposition defender inside the box.

Centre-back Hassan Altambakti stuck out a leg during a clumsy slide tackle and clattered into Son who in-turn hit the deck.

The 31-year-old was clearly wiped out and turned round expecting to see the referee point to the penalty spot before realising no decision was forthcoming.

Premier League referee Andy Madley was overseeing the match but waved play on much to Son’s disbelief as the South Korean was prevented what looked like a certain penalty.

A virtually-empty St James’ Park offered little protest to the decision during the first-half while South Korea players cut stunned figures.

Saudi Arabia staged the encounter in the iconic north-east stadium due to Newcastle’s ties to the Middle Eastern nation.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is the controlling owner in Newcastle and the club has seen an increasing presence from the country.

There were only around 6,000 supporters in attendance at Tuesday’s friendly.
