Legendary England boss Terry Venables helped Paul Gascoigne when he was at his lowest, with the ex-Spurs star 'wanting to kill himself in a prison cell'.
Football great Venables, who has died aged 80, revealed he was once summoned to London after a troubled Gazza battling alcohol and personal demons was held at a West London police station. The former Spurs midfielder turned manager said: "His stare was chilling and he frightened the life out of me. He simply said, 'I want to kill myself'.
"It was an awful moment and I have no doubt he knew what he was saying. I told him I wouldn't let that happen." Venables later helped to raise funds to pay for Gascoigne's rehab, with other former team-mates and the FA.
