Emma Hayes is set to become the highest-paid female coach in the world after agreeing a deal to become the next coach of the USWNT. The current Chelsea boss has won four consecutive Women’s Super League titles with the Blues and six in total, but after 11 glorious years in West London she is about to embark on a new adventure on the global stage.
The 47-year-old’s pending departure from the domestic game was announced by her club on November 4, in anticipation that news of her exit was about to be leaked.
A statement said: “Chelsea FC can today confirm that highly decorated Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes OBE will depart the club at the end of the season to pursue a new opportunity outside of the WSL and club football.”
Since joining Chelsea in 2012 she has also won five FA Cups and two League Cups in addition to her league title haul.
But after a glorious period in the English game, Hayes has been pinpointed as the woman who can return the USA women’s team to their former standing at the pinnacle of the sport.
The USWNT won the Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019 before suffering a shock early exit from this year’s tournament, which was eventually won by Spain.
Getting the right person for the job doesn’t come cheap and accepting the high-profile role across the Atlantic is expected to be a total game-changer for the life of the current Chelsea coach, with negotiations now in the final stages.
Chelsea writer and podcaster Si Phillips wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “US Soccer officials are in London to finalise their move for Emma Hayes.
“Hayes has agreed to become head coach of United States national team and talks are taking place to seal a deal that is expected to make Hayes the highest-paid female coach in the world.”

The only major trophy Hayes has failed to win at Chelsea is the Champions League. Her team did reach the final in 2021 but were trounced 4-0 by Barcelona, conceding all four goals in 36 minutes.
Once a deal with the USWNT is rubber-stamped, Hayes will see out the current Women’s Super League season with Chelsea which finishes on May 18, 2024, with the Women’s Champions League final taking place a week later on May 25.
Hayes has previously held a coaching role in the United States when she was head coach of the Chicago Red Stars from 2008 until 2010 before joining Chelsea in 2012.
