Vincent Kompany’s issues rallying cry after Burnley sit 18th, losing seven of their first nine league games in worst run since 1889

  • Burnley were soundly beaten 3-0 by Thomas Franks’ exciting Brentford side
  • Vincent Kompany’s team are on a terrible run to star the season, and are sat 18th

Talk about a reality check for Burnley. Last season they knew nothing but winning. They finished top of the Championship with 101 points. Now they can hardly buy a win.

After losing 3-0 at Brentford, the stark reality sets in. Seven defeats in their opening nine matches for the first time in a top-flight season since 1888-89 and 23 goals shipped — the second-highest in the league this term.

Things look bleak. Manager Vincent Kompany, however, believes the lowest moments can produce the biggest inspiration.

‘My learning from being with teams at this level is you’re never far away from getting that real togetherness that gets you results,’ he said.

‘You have top teams who can lead the individuals to sort things out. For us it’s a collective challenge.’

Kompany’s side face an okay run of fixtures next, facing sides like Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

However they still face big challenges with a trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal and then facing West Ham at Turf Moor still to come.

Kompany remained positive however, insisting: ‘I have very a strong feeling about these type of moments. They define you as a human being. You’re at your highest high and you get success — can you still be together?

‘What I like about this group is we’ve always reacted to these moments and we have to do it again. It’s a different level and we’ve got to level up.’

Meanwhile Brentford look on the up, but it’s taken until late October for Brentford to get going – and with games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal coming up – this win could prove to be pivotal.
