Man Utd v Newcastle: Pictures
It would cost Manchester United a pretty penny to get rid of Erik ten Hag at this stage of his contract, but the club has also been burnt badly in the past. Pressure is mounting on the Dutchman to instigate a run of positive results after Newcastle United dished out another thrashing on Wednesday night.
The Magpies running out 3-0 winners in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford compounded a miserable few days for the Red Devils, who were on the wrong end of the same scoreline when Manchester City came to town on Sunday.
Ten Hag is in a race against time to get his players firing, having lost eight out of his first 15 matches this campaign. But a reported £15million pay-off will force United to think twice as they weigh up whether to cut ties with the former Ajax boss.
Such a sum would represent one of the biggest pay-offs in football history, although it’s far from the manager at the top of the pile.

According to reports, the £15m it would take to pay off the final 18 months of Ten Hag’s contract would leave him seventh on the all-time list, narrowly ahead of Fabio Capello’s Russian severance package and that of Luis Felipe Scolari to leave Chelsea.
Unfortunately for the Blues, they have become specialists in eye-watering splits with big-name managers. Antonio Conte leads the way with a mammoth £26.6m back in 2018.

Graham Potter is next with a £22m pay-off in April this year, but the fact Chelsea shelled out another £21m to lure him away from Brighton only seven months prior makes his case particularly striking.
Jose Mourinho landed a whopping £18m in 2007 when Chelsea called time on his first stint at the club, meaning the Londoners occupy three of the top-four places on an unfortunate list. The other also involved the Portuguese, who received £19.6m to leave Old Trafford in 2018.
The Glazers could at least take comfort in the notion that Ten Hag’s exit would fall short of that figure, if the time comes. Laurent Blanc’s £17m Paris Saint-Germain exit takes fifth place, with Mourinho sneaking in for a third time ahead of the United boss due to another mega pay day from Tottenham in 2021.
The Red Devils now have a favourable run of fixtures in which to rediscover a feel-good factor around the club, starting with a trip to Fulham in Saturday’s early kick-off slot.
