Accrington Stanley chief Andy Holt has hit back at Wrexham for a ‘stupidly timed statement’ promising to cut ticket prices by £5 for their return fixture in March – after the Reds raised costs by the same amount for this weekend’s game.
Stanley welcomed Wrexham to the Wham Stadium on Saturday but announced they were increasing prices to allow the club to pay for a high policing and stewarding bill – with Wrexham bringing a large following to the stadium.
Wrexham released a statement hinting they were far from pleased with Stanley’s decision, saying: ‘In response to Accrington Stanley’s decision to increase the matchday price by £5 from that previously charged at Wham Stadium for league games this season, we have decided to reduce the price of matchday tickets by £5 for the return game at the STōK Cae Ras on 02/03/2023.’
That brought a furious response from Holt on X – formerly known as Twitter – saying their ‘mistimed’ statement was ‘surprising’ and defended raising costs, citing the high bills the club had to pay for the game.
Stanley also raised ticket prices when both Derby County and Bolton visited last season.

‘It’s surprising how stupid given a former CEO of @EFL is employed by you.
‘Let’s have a great day for all fans safely, whatever the outcome on the pitch. Welcome to @ASFCofficial.
‘Unfortunately costs are very high for this game. Big policing bills and stewarding big stewarding costs.

‘I appreciate what @Wrexham_AFC are doing for our fans though.’
Accrington Stanley went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to a penalty from Tommy Leigh in the second half, before Rosaire Longelo added a two-goal cushion.
Wrexham remain above Accrington in the League Two table – with Reynolds’ side sitting in fourth place on 33 points after nine wins, six draws and three losses.
Stanley, meanwhile, are seventh after nine wins, two draws and seven losses.
