Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney had to be rushed into a ‘monarchy boot camp’ before King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground last year. The club’s two Hollywood owners have shared details of the King’s visit, which took place in December, via a promotion clip for series two of the hit Disney Plus series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

The trailer starts with Reynolds saying: “So the King of England called. We went to monarchy boot camp. It’s like the military excpect your pinky’s always up.”

An etiquette coach is seen training Reynolds and McElhenney for meeting the King. She informs them that their handshake with the royal party must be no more than ‘two pumps and release’.

Somewhat unsettled by the unfamiliar environment, McElhenney says: “I feel like a serial killer.”

The visit was of huge importance to Wrexham as they sought additional financial support to help redevelop their ageing stadium as an international standard facility.

As per the New York Post, the club’s executive director Humphrey Ker said: “We are trying to get £20 million worth of Kop [stadium seating] funding from the UK government. Two years of work has gone into lining up all the pieces of the puzzle to try and get this funding and that will give us an extra 5,500 seats.

“It will also give us a stadium that is deemed to be of international standards so we can bring Welsh football back to the Racecourse. It’s the biggest and most expensive piece of the endeavour.”

The same report suggested that Reynolds faced some difficulties in adapting to the required protocol. He reportedly said: “I think I am going have a hard time with this. The idea of bowing to somebody. It triggers something.”

However, the trip looks to have been a successful one, with King Charles appearing to throw his support behind the North Wales outfit’s ambitious project.

During the trip, he told dignitaries: “I had the opportunity to see one of the other wonders of Wrexham, namely the football club, which is busy putting Wrexham on the map as never before.”

Wrexham are currently 13th in League Two after returning to the Football last month for the first time in 15 years. Deadpool actor Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star McElhenney bought the club in November 2020 and have since reversed the team’s fortunes, winning promotion from the National League last season with a record 111 points.

The new series of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ airs on September 12.
