Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup squad ensured that they would stay in the top tier of the group competition after beating Sweden in this weekend’s play-off tie. After Jodie Burrage suffered a heartbreaking debut in Saturday’s opening match, Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart stepped up to win the next three rubbers and secure victory for team GB.
Boulter and Dart have ensured that Britain will get to fight for a spot in the elite BJK Cup Finals next year, helping the team end the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Sweden on home soil in London’s Copper Box Arena. It was a tough start to the play-off weekend as Burrage – playing her first-ever match in the team competition – suffered a devastating defeat.
The British No 2 raced to a 4-0 lead over Kajsa Rinaldo Persson in the first rubber on Saturday but she won just one more game as the world No 372 stunned Burrage 6-4 6-1. Boulter got one back when she came out for Saturday’s second match, beating Caijsa Hennemann 6-2 6-1 in a dominant display.
And Britain’s top-ranked woman was back in action during Sunday’s first rubber, avenging Britain’s previous loss to Rinaldo Persson with a 6-1 7-6(5) win. Dart was then called up instead of Burrage to face Hennemann in the reverse singles and put the nail in the coffin for Sweden’s BJK Cup hopes, winning 7-5 6-2.
