Anthony Joshua teams up with Tyson Fury’s ex-coach as his future becomes clear

Anthony Joshua has been training with Tyson Fury’s former coach Ben Davison, despite still being under the tutorship of his usual trainer, Derrick Brown. Joshua has been keeping busy as he awaits his next challenger, but his recent switch has left questions regarding the future of Brown on his team.

Joshua’s last fight saw him face Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena in London after his old rival Dillian Whyte was unable to participate after failing a drugs test. AJ won the bout via seventh round knockout, causing much speculation over who his next opponent would be.

Deontay Wilder is the most common name linked having been without an opponent since also defeating Helenius back in 2022. And it’s since been revealed that Joshua has been ramping up his preparations for a return to the ring after working with Tyson Fury’s former coach Ben Davison.

Davison had previously worked with Fury for a number of years and has often been credited with his return to boxing after his 2015 win over Wladimir Klitschko. The coach helped guide Fury to his controversial draw against Wilder before eventually being replaced by SugarHill Steward.

The news was confirmed after David ‘KD’ Ghansa, a member of Joshua’s management team, spoke out in an interview with Boxing King Media. “Anthony Joshua wants to be very active,” KD said.

“He’s currently ticking over, he’s down at the Ben Davison Performance Centre at the moment. He’s ticking over with Ben, Jamie TKV, we had him in our camps in Dallas a couple times.”

His comments have caused a stir among boxing fans who have been left wondering where that leaves his usual trainer, Derrick Brown. However, KD also addressed those concerns in the interview claiming that the move is only temporary in order to get his fitness back up to speed.

“He’s [Joshua] still active,” he added, “When he’s got a date, you’ll see him back out in Dallas, back with Derrick James continuing the work.”

Joshua and Brown have enjoyed a successful relationship over the years which has included recent wins over Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius. Speaking earlier this year, Joshua revealed what it’s like to work under the coach.

“I’ve got to work harder and that’s what Derrick does, he’s a hard worker” Joshua said. “I know what sacrifice is, it’s actually gaining. [In the gym] I think ‘is he not seeing that I’m dying here?!’

“But I realize I can’t feel sorry for myself because I’m going to get something out of this. I had to think to myself, what does this mean? He’s trying to get me to a certain level which requires going through torturous methods.”
