Michael Van Gerwen previews World Darts Championship
Scottish darts player Cameron Menzies was delighted to go through to the second round of the World Darts Championship with a straight-sets victory over Rusty-Jake Rodriguez, but there is one opponent he is desperate not to be matched up against. Menzies is in a relationship with fellow professional Fallon Sherrock and was reading the draw with fear that they may face each other.
Menzies’ victory over Rodriguez sets up a second-round tie with Dave Chisnall. And his first-round win came after Menzies had spent the morning of his win working as a plumber. He finished his half-shift before rushing over to Alexandra Palace in order to take on the Austrian and ensure he would keep his Tour card along with at least £15,000 in prize money.
But the further he goes into the tournament, the greater chance he has of being paired up against his girlfriend Sherrock – something he is keen to avoid. “You don’t understand how many issues we had,” Menzies admitted. “She went down for the draw, I was on the computer going: ‘Please, not Fallon, please, not Fallon’.
“There’s a handful of players you don’t want to draw and Fallon is up there. I play Fallon in the house and I beat her eight times out of 10, but she has a moment when she smashes me.

“I know for a fact up there she would batter me. It’s her stage, she would batter me. Rusty is a very good player but I would take him over Fallon in a heartbeat.”
The opening day of the tournament was a busy one for Menzies, having travelled from Milton Keynes where he worked as a plumber to Ally Pally to compete in the most prestigious darts tournament in the world. He explained that going to his day job helped prepare him mentally for the match.

“I was panicking earlier because I was working today but it kind of chilled me out – it made me realise that darts is a hobby and it’s not the be-all and end-all,” he said.
“Today I changed the waste in a basin, I couldn’t get the pedestal out because it was concreted in. Then I did an emergency which was a burst water main and I fixed it, then I went to a tenant’s house to fix a bath and she wouldn’t let me in.
“Then I went to another job to fix a kitchen sink, so my job is maintenance. Basically, it is burst pipes and blocked drains – it’s not pretty. I would like to be in a situation where I can give up the day job and do this full-time, but I have a long way to go.”
