The world of professional wrestling is coming to Empower Field at Mile High.
The Broncos and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) announced Monday that they have formed a partnership, marking the first time an NFL team has collaborated with the Mexican professional wrestling organization.
A quartet of luchadores — Místico, Atlantis Jr., Templario and Volador Jr. — will square off in a pregame exhibition during the Broncos’ home game against the Packers on Oct. 22. In addition, Denver’s Miles the Mascot and “five of his friends” will have an exhibition match on Sept. 8 at Arena Mexico in Mexico City.
The announcement comes amid CMLL’s 90th anniversary celebration. Colorado artist Armando Silva is designing a limited edition T-shirt that will be available for purchase in October at the Broncos team stores as well as Dicass Sports stores in Mexico City.
This isn’t the first time the Broncos and the world of pro wrestling have crossed paths. Former Broncos linemen Wahoo McDaniel and Darren Drozdov spent time in the squared circle as pro wrestlers. In 2016, following their Super Bowl 50 victory, the team was awarded a WWE championship belt complete with custom Broncos side plates. Former Denver running back Clinton Portis rocked a replica World Championship Wrestling heavyweight belt after running for 218 yards and five touchdowns against the Chiefs in 2003.
And also on Monday, World Wrestling Entertainment released a series of NFL legacy belts. The Broncos one — with gold plates on a navy blue belt — features the current logo below “Broncos” and “Denver” text and above a “Est. 1960.” The older Broncos “D” logo is featured on the side plates. The belt is being sold for $549.99.
