Arsenal hero Theo Walcott roasts Tottenham after Aston Villa defeat

Ange Postecoglou says ‘we’ll get through it’ after Tottenham are beaten again

Arsenal hero Theo Walcott roasted Tottenham on Sunday just hours after the Lilywhites had suffered their third consecutive Premier League defeat. Spurs went head-to-head with Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their first encounter since the international break but lost the match 2-1.

Walcott joined Danny Murphy and Jermaine Jenas in the Match of the Day 2 studio to analyse Villa’s trip to Tottenham and Manchester United’s 3-0 victory at Everton. And as he gave his thoughts on Ollie Watkins’ winner in north London, the former winger couldn’t resist a jibe at the Lilywhites’ expense.

“What I really enjoyed first of all is the slight sort of body movement”, he remarked as he spoke about the England striker. “Because he’s been running in behind pretty much the whole game, he’s just put Ben Davies in doubt a little bit. You see Ben Davies wants to come in but then he drops back and gives him the space.

And Walcott added: “I lived off running in behind Tottenham, particularly, so I’m pretty happy.” Presenter Mark Chapman clearly saw the funny side of Walcott’s dig as he burst into a fit of laughter and exclaimed: “Whoa, you’ve gone early there, Theo.”

Tottenham had stormed to the top of the Premier League table earlier this season following a formidable start to the new campaign. But they have now dropped to fifth and have been cut four points adrift of league leaders Arsenal following defeats against Chelsea, Wolves and Villa this month.

Spurs may count themselves unlucky to lose to the Villans, however, after carving out a hatful of chances and seeing three goals from Son Heung-min ruled out for offside. And following the encounter, manager Ange Postecoglou insisted he was happy with the performance of his players.

“A tough outcome but I couldn’t be happier with the way the boys played”, he told Sky Sports. “I’m really proud of them. I thought we played some fantastic football and on another day we would’ve won comfortably. I can’t fault the effort they put into the game.

“There’s no frustration. We played well and as a manager that’s all you can ask for. Sometimes the outcomes don’t go the way you want but as a manager I want the players committed to what we are trying to do and they were all totally committed.

“From my perspective all I can ask is what they gave. The players played an outstanding game of football and as a manager that’s all we can ask for.”
