Chris Sutton says Todd Cantwell is ‘away with fairies’ in ‘bang average’ rant

Chris Sutton lashed out at Rangers forward Todd Cantwell, blasting him for being "away with the fairies."

The former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker has been rather critical of the former Norwich City forward. After Michael Beale was sacked by the Scottish giants, Sutton earmarked the likes of Cantwell for criticism over their performances.

The former England U21 star then fought his corner, saying it was “sad” that he was criticised by the Premier League winner. Never one to mince nor sugar coat his words, Sutton unloaded on the 25-year-old.

Speaking on It's All Coming Up podcast, Sutton said: “He's had another pop this week. The thing I don't understand, there's this old adage in football – ‘do your talking on the pitch’. I think at this moment in time he's away with the fairies.

“I just think for someone that to date has had a bang average career, he doesn't half have a high opinion of himself. He's better known for his social media presence, being on TikTok than he is for what he's done on the pitch.

“If I was him I would want to address that, I think he needs to focus on his football. While referencing Cantwell’s popular TikTok page, Sutton also said: “I don't do Kate Bush weird-type dances on TikTok to stay relevant.

“My role as a pundit when I'm south of the border is to talk about English teams. I've had a role north of the border for a decade, and pundits talk about all Scottish teams so that's why I talk about Todd Cantwell and Rangers.

“I also talk about Aberdeen and Hearts and Hibs and all the other Scottish teams because that is my job.” Cantwell has contributed six goals and six assists in 28 appearances for Rangers. He joined the club in a bargain £1.5m move from the Canaries in the 2023 January transfer window.

Cantwell had previously hit out at the East Anglian side, accusing them of a “barbaric” exclusion from the first team during his final season. He was a mainstay at the club, coming through their academy system but was loaned to Bournemouth in the 2021-22 campaign, when Norwich were in the Premier League.
