England fans think Harry Maguire was lucky not to give away a penalty after a reckless challenge in his own box against North Macedonia.

The Manchester United defender bungled into Elif Elmas while attempting to block a shot just outside the six-yard area, falling to knees and effectively shoving the Macedonian star to the ground in awkward fashion. His blushes were saved by the referee who signalled for a goal kick, but fans on social media are convinced it was a foul.

"How’s Maguire got away with that haha," one X user said. "Harry Maguire doesn’t help himself," said another. A third added: "Macedonia robbed of a penalty," while a fourth laughed: "Harry Maguire the gift that keeps on giving. If you don’t laugh you’ll cry."

Maguire was handed his second-successive start after playing 90 minutes in England's 2-0 win over Malta on Friday and fans continue wonder why Southgate keeps picking him. "What does Maguire have to do for Southgate to drop him?" another fan asked.

"You just know England will go into the Euros with Maguire starting and Levi Colwill on the bench and everyone will wonder why we go out in the quarters again. Drop him Gareth," raged another.

England did concede a penalty a few minutes later, but it had nothing to do with Maguire. Manchester City ace Rico Lewis, who was making his international debut, was controversially penalised after his hand struck Macedonian forward Bojan Miovski in the face as he was jumping to head the ball clear.

Enis Bardhi's subsequent effort was acrobatically saved by Jordan Pickford, but the Trabzonspor midfielder knocked home the rebound to put his side 1-0 up just before half time.

Defeat here would be the Three Lions' first of the qualifying campaign, and although the match is a dead rubber, with England already qualified and North Macedonia unable to catch Italy or Ukraine, it'll nonetheless be something of a confidence knocker ahead of next year's tournament.
