Every Onana blunder for Man Utd ranked – with Galatasaray nowhere near worst

Andre Onana's £47million move to Manchester United is quickly turning into a nightmare.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper's arrival was supposed to usher in a new era of swanky modern progressivism at the club, what with his enviable ball-playing and distribution abilities and all, but a series of high-profile errors are threatening to turn him into a liability after just a few months. So prevalent are his blunders that he has all but deposed Harry Maguire as the in-house dunce, and fans are running out of patience for him.

His howler against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday sparked calls for United to sign an emergency replacement in January – and it was far from his worst this season. With that in mind, Daily Star Sport has rated all of Onana's major gaffes in a United shirt out of 10. Enjoy!

Wolves – August

Blunder rating: 7/10

Onana introduced himself to Old Trafford, and to Sasa Kalajdzic's face, by clattering into the Wolves star in the box with seconds remaining of his debut. He somehow didn't give a penalty away, and four months on we still can't work out what he the plan was when he set off like a freight train towards a ball he was realistically never going to win.

Was he trying to punch it? Was he trying to block a header? It's embarrassingly unclear. What is clear though is just how reckless the challenge was – an early warning sign Erik ten Hag ought to have heeded.

Which of these do you think is Onana's worst blunder? Let us know in the comments section below.

Brighton – September

Blunder rating: 6/10

Eyebrows were raised again after Onana was beaten all too easily by Joao Pedro's late strike in United's 3-1 defeat to Brighton. He patted the ball into the side of his net, despite the fact there wasn't an awful lot of power on it.

It wasn't the worst of gaffes. After all, spinning balls are a menace to deal with. But it definitely falls into the 'he should have done better' category.

Bayern Munich – September

Blunder rating: 8/10

Onana's first Champions League appearance since last season's final in Istanbul started with a whimper after he spilled Leroy Sane's relatively tame shot into the net during United's 4-3 defeat to Bayern.

It was a save any half-decent keeper would expect to make, and scores points here both for Onana's technical ineptitude and the fact it ultimately cost his team points – given United's late, but unsuccessful fightback. This one was a real a confidence-knocker too, for both player and club.

Galatasaray – October

Blunder rating: 3/10

United's Champions League campaign went from bad to worse when they lost to Galatasaray, with Onana once again at the centre of the drama. He gave the ball away while trying to play out from the back, and Casemiro conceded a penalty and got sent off trying to clean up the mess.

We were tempted to score this higher given that Onana was brought in largely because of his ability on the ball, but at the end of the day it was just a misplaced pass. Even Ederson plays a few of those. Plus, Mauro Icardi missed the resulting penalty, though that didn't really matter as United still lost the game.

Brentford – October

Blunder rating: 9/10

Oof. This was a bad one. The former Inter Milan keeper tried, for some unknown reason, to slap Mathias Jensen's trickled shot away with his hand, rather than simply catching it like a normal person, and the ball ended up pea-rolling underneath his uselessly outstretched arm.

He got it all wrong from a technical and decision-making standpoint, and even though his blushes were spared by a Scott McTominay's injury time double, this has to go down as his worst gaffe in a United shirt so far. It was like something you'd see at a Sunday League match. Bonkers stuff.

Galatasaray – November

Blunder rating: 4/10

We've got a little bit of sympathy for Onana here given the fact he was almost completely unsighted, but it's still a major gaffe, and one you wouldn't expect a top keeper to make. The ex-Ajax man let Hakim Ziyech's free-kick whizz past him after wrongly-predicting his former team-mate would try and go over the wall.

It isn't the worst mistake you'll ever see, but look how close he is to the ball when it crosses the line, and indeed how far the ball is away from the corner of the goal. It was a really avoidable blunder, and one that stupidly let Galatasaray back in the game when United had a comfortable two goal cushion. Oh, speaking of which…

Galatasaray – November

Blunder rating: 7/10

Half an hour later lightning struck twice. Ziyech grabbed his second goal of the game from another free-kick, which like his first was relatively tame and aimed right at the centre of Onana's goal.

The error-prone African flapped at the ball, much he like did at Brentford star Jensen's shot (above) and haphazardly bungled it into the net. Granted, the shot bounced awkwardly just before reaching him, and there's a chance he was expecting someone to get a touch on it, but you can't really excuse the way he made such a mess of things, especially since the goal sparked a Galatasaray comeback, and may have subsequently cost United a place in the Champions League knockouts.
