Liverpool fears raised as Al-Ittihad chief teases Mohamed Salah transfer update

Liverpool and Arsenal will push Man City for the title | Football Digest

Liverpool might fear another Al-Ittihad bid for Mohamed Salah after the Saudi Arabian outfit’s president promised to very soon open up on their failed attempts to sign the Egyptian in the summer transfer window. The Reds rejected a mammoth offer for Salah in the final week of August.

Al-Ittihad are widely reported to have desperately tried to sign Salah as the transfer window came to a close. A record-breaking £215million proposal was submitted to the Anfield side, but it was quickly rejected.

Many reports claimed that the winger was intrigued by the potential of joining a host of stars who moved to the Saudi Pro League ahead of the 2023-24 season. However, Jurgen Klopp did not allow the transfer to go ahead.

Al-Ittihad president Anmar Al-Haili has now promised to explain how he failed to acquire Salah. He also hopes to open up on similar big-money moves for Sergio Ramos, who instead joined boyhood club Sevilla, and Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, he said: “I remained silent… but I hope to be able to respond soon to what happened in the last week of the summer market regarding Salah, Ramos and De Bruyne.”

Liverpool can expect Saudi clubs to revisit their interest in Salah over the next few months. The 31-year-old has only 18 months remaining on his contract, giving the Reds less negotiating power than they had in the summer.

The Premier League side will likely not want to lose Salah for free when his current deal expires in 2025. But Liverpool won’t realistically be able to demand the same £215m fee that was offered in the summer the longer Salah’s contract continues to run down.

Klopp insisted that Salah would stay in the summer and later grew frustrated over being asked about the former Chelsea player’s situation. Quizzed in mid-September on whether he expects Salah to see out the season with Liverpool, the German said: “You can’t wait until December to ask these questions?

“We will see what happens, but no, I’m not worried about it at this moment. I didn’t even think about it until you opened the wound again. I’m not worried.”

Salah has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season. He has scored 12 goals across all competitions, including 10 in the Premier League.
