Luis Diaz’s parents were kidnapped in Colombia on Saturday evening. The Liverpool star’s mother has been rescued but searches continue for his father.
The kidnapping occured in Barrancas, La Guajira, where it is believed unidentified armed motorcyclists tracked the truck Diaz’s parents were in. The vehicle is said to have been intercepted and boarded before both parents were taken away.
Cilenis Marulanda, Diaz’s mother, was quickly rescued after a blockade was enforced by the army and police. Efforts remain ongoing to retrieve Luis Manuel Díaz.
Director of police, General William Salamanca, gave an update on the mother once she was back in safe hands. “We are pleased that you are free again, madam,” he said “I congratulate them [the authorities] for the reaction of all the police officers dedicated to the cause.”

In reference to Diaz’s dad, he added: “Let’s continue searching for the soccer player’s father, we already have the mother.” A source also told SEMENA: “She is in good health, scared, but she is fine. They took the father away on a motorcycle, they took him out of the car and took him along the trails there.”
CCTV footage obtained by SEMANA appears to show a motorcyclist riding behind the vehicle Diaz’s parents were driving in just before the kidnapping.
The Colombia national team tweeted a statement of support for Diaz, it read: “The Colombian Football Federation regrets the security situation that the parents of our player Luis Diaz are going through. From the FCF we express our solidarity with him and his entire family and we call for the relevant authorities to act as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.”

Diaz signed for Liverpool in January 2022 from Porto. While he resides in England, his parents remained in Colombia. But despite being so far away, his relationship with his parents has always remained strong.
“God gives him blessings so that he can continue to excel,” his mother said last year. “He is loving with his dad, with everyone, we talk every day. He tells me, ‘Mummy, you’re the best mummy in the world; I love you very much’. He doesn’t hold grudges against anyone because he’s always been simple since he was a child, humble; I’ve seen him the same way since he was a child.”
