Napoli vs Union Berlin almost suspended as fireworks ‘thrown into away section’

Napoli’s Champions League clash against Union Berlin was almost suspended after home fans hurled fireworks into the away section.

The sides fought out a 1-1 draw as German debutants Union secured their first-ever point in the competition. However, the match was overshadowed by events off the pitch.

At one stage, home supporters reportedly hurled missiles, including fireworks, into the section containing 2,500 Union supporters at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. That was followed by a message over the PA system warning that the match would be suspended if the trouble did not abate.

There had also been violence in the build-up the match. On Tuesday night, fans from Germany clashed with police, while Napoli ultras also went looking for trouble with the travelling fans. The result was a pyro-waving, firework firing brawl in the streets of the historic Italian city.

It is understood 11 Union supporters were arrested in the build-up to the game. Reports from ANSA said around 300 supporters of the Bundesliga club gathered at the Piazza Garibaldi train station and refused to submit to checks, before eventually taking the streets.

Further reports also claim the fracas between the supporters and the police resulted in numerous cars being damaged, while police forces were attacked by cobblestones, clubs, metal and wooden rods and with firecrackers and pyrotechnics.

Before the game, Union Berlin took to their social media channels to advise fans who were travelling to Italy. They wrote: “As both the host club and the local authorities have emphasised the potential risks for travelling football fans, FC Union Berlin would like to ask you to observe the following information: Union fans are advised to wear red and white fan clothing in the stadium only during their stay in Naples. Outlying areas of the city of Naples are to be avoided.”
