Tennis fans react to Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon win
Dan Evans has revealed he played golf and “drank a lot” after losing at Wimbledon – and then won his first title of the year in Washington. The British No.2 admitted his form was “embarrassing” and he did not want to play tennis as he suffered a horror run of six consecutive ATP Tour defeats over the summer.
He went out in the first round of Wimbledon to world No.79 Quentin Halys. The world No.28 then took time away from the court to hit the fairways and pub – and returned to beat Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to his second ATP Tour title.
Before launching his latest Grand Slam bid at the US Open, Evans said: “I didn’t do anything much after Wimbledon,” said Evans. “I played a lot of golf, drank a lot and then went out to the States to start preparing.
“It’s sometimes good for the brain to just relax. Been a pest to the golf club really. I play off four. I go there to just have a bit of fun. It’s good. We play for a bit of money and get out there with just friends at the golf club. Then everything clicked that week in Washington.”
Evans, who faces Colombian world No.70 Daniel Galan in the first round, has also teed up with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. “We played a few holes with Alcaraz and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero at Royal Wimbledon,” he said. “Ferrero is better. He has spent his retirement wisely that is for sure. And he was even coaching Alcaraz on the golf course!”
Meanwhile, Katie Boulter claimed she will be inspired by the Lionesses’ run to the World Cup final as she seeks her first victory in New York.
The British No.1 said: “What they did was incredible and so inspirational to a lot of young women. A lot of young girls have come up to me and said: ‘Have you seen the Lionesses? Have you seen what they did?’ And it’s actually just nice to see a little buzz around and to see a lot of girls getting into sport.”

Boulter, who opens against France’s world No.73 Diane Parry, is now up to world No.60 after winning her first WTA title in Nottingham. “I feel like I’ve earned this place and I’ve spent many years trying to get there and I feel like I should have been here for the past few years,” said the injury-dogged star.
“I’m not happy at all with where I’m at, because I want to keep pushing and I really feel like I’ve got a great chance to do so. But it also feels strange because I’ve worked my whole life to get to this point and it doesn’t sometimes feel real.”
